The newest sex trend to make waves — or rather, wrinkles — in bedrooms across the nation? Electro-sex. Yes, that’s right: couples are now using electricity during their romp sessions as a way to amp things up in-between the sheets. But beyond igniting passion, those who practice electro-sex claim it also taps into the body’s nervous system, The Daily Beast reports. Read on below to learn more.

Electro-sex. Also referred to as erotic electro-stimulation or electro-play, electro-sex throws, well, electricity into the mix. We’re talking, like, literal electricity. Ouch, indeed.

Sensory level. As The Daily Beast notes, this type sexual play goes way beyond your regular ol' lubes, toys, and costumes. "Gadgets, toys l, and tinglers that bring electricity in between the sheets span a huge range: electrified butt plugs, c*ck rings and masturbatory sleeves for the lads, eggs, g-spot probes and Kegel balls for the girls, nipple clamps for both, and—increasingly popular—'e-stim' kits that turn both partners into part of an electrical circuit via electrodes and sticky pads,” the site notes. Seemingly, the possibilities are endless.

Sensation. So, exactly what does it feel like to get electrified during sex? Well, it’s not *that* simple to explain. As The Daily Beast reports, the sensation is a “shivering, tingly tickle,” and it’s totally different from that of any other sex toy. Why? Because it taps into your biology— like, literally.

Stimulation. Per The Daily Beast: "The human nervous system operates via tiny electrical signals. These toys just tap into that natural biological currency by stimulating the networks that already course throughout your body, triggering powerful sensory outputs—putting the ‘charge' into ‘discharge,' so to speak.” Pretty cool, huh?

Weird? While the whole thing might seem a little too weird for you (at the moment), the phenomenon is quickly gaining traction in the mainstream. In other words, electro-play is making its way from the world of kink and BDSM to the world of your seemingly vanilla, next door neighbor. Yes, really.

Mainstream. “We have seen e-stim sales rocket in the past year,” Wilde, copywriter and bondage expert for online sex shop Lovehoney.com, explained to The Daily Beast. In fact, since 2014, their sales have more than quadrupled. The question then is: why?

Why. When two people connect to each other during an electro-play session, they do so using wires. By doing this, they have the ability to create an “electric current by touching each other, closing the circuit,” The Daily Beast reports. And this, as it turns out, feels incredibly good.

Why. “The magical thing about electrical currents is that your skin is conductive—you can be sat next to your partner, connected via wires, and not feel anything, but the minute you touch you can share this cool, tingly feeling that is a completely different sensation to vibration, spanking or tickling,” Wilde explained to The Daily Beast. “It’s an entirely new way to see what your body can do—-it turns you into the sex toy itself.”

The devices. That said, electro-sex devices aren’t anything new. As The Daily Beast points out, these toys have been around for decades— they just weren’t really being used for this purpose.

The devices. The Daily Beast notes that "early e-stim models grew out of medical TENS devices, which use electricity to treat pain and muscle problems.” Meanwhile, electrified muscles toners, which became popular in the ‘70s, are still around and available for purchase.

The devices. Overall, enthusiasts of the practice use how long these devices have been around to highlight that electro-sex isn’t dangerous or painful. That is, unless you want it to be.

New materials. Nonetheless, the question remains: why is electro-sex getting so big now? It all boils down to the shift by manufacturers to use new materials— more specifically, smooth silicone instead of shiny metal, The Daily Beast reports.

New materials. “The metal-based products were great for conductivity, but they can look a bit scary--hard, shiny, chrome, and intimidating,” Wilde explained to The Daily Beast.

Vibrator industry. In addition, toy makers are also now looking to the vibrator industry for inspiration— not to mention, tricks and tips. Seemingly, they’re making their devices not only simpler and user-friendly, but more "ergonomically sleek,” according to The Daily Beast.

Vibrator industry. “Eight years ago, sets looked like something out of a science lab, covered in knobs and switches,” Wilde explained to The Daily Beast. Today, they’ve been scaled down to just four buttons. “They are easier to master than your TV remote control,” she added.
