When we watch a Hollywood blockbuster movie, we often assume that the sex scenes are faked or just filmed with extras. Most of them are, but what many people don’t realize is that filming sex scenes is an art. And, it’s usually not half as sexy or glamorous as you’d hope it to be. Here are some of the biggest secrets behind what Hollywood sex scene filming requires - and why you probably would never want to shoot one.

Unlike regular sex, there’s actual choreographers that have to help you plan everything out. That’s right. Most Hollywood sex scenes will involve directors that tell the actors where to move, how to move, and how to look. In fact, choreographing sex scenes often means that the dance choreographer will have to try the positions they want to incorporate with another person.

And, after the choreography is set, the dance expert will often teach each actor individually. The reason why is because they don’t want to leave “anything to chance,” and because the choreographers actually do have to worry about people feeling groped while filming. This is really important to ensure the scene seems realistic, and also that all of the actors involved are comfortable.

Oh, and private parts don’t touch. Though some actors are totally fine with letting it all hang out, every scene set has a “toolbox” of things that keep genitalia covered. Women will often have to wear “snatch patches” while men wear “cock socks.” And despite the name, cock socks actually are made to fit
everything down there.

If you’re on your monthly, too bad. An actress can’t stop a sex scene shoot just because she’s on her period. While they can replace the strip that covers a woman’s parts and let her change her tampon, the show must go on. So, no, women do not get to bail just because they have their monthly.

Sometimes, body doubles are used. Most of the time, a body double will get called in if a sex shoot lasts for hours upon hours. Since many shoots are physically demanding, they will use body doubles so that the actual actor can finish shooting other films, shows, and scenes. This means the person you’re watching may not actually be the actor or actress you like.

Actors do occasionally get erections. Even with all the people, the lack of clothing and the presence of a similarly sexy actress can make some actors a little randy. Some actors actually have a policy of apologizing ahead of time, just so that things don’t get too awkward.

Full body makeup is a thing. If you thought it was bad enough that actors and actresses have to sit in makeup chairs for hours just for their faces alone, we have some news for you. Makeup artists are also hired to do work on the actors’ bodies. This is done to help cover up blemishes and bruises they may get.

Oh, and spray tan is the preferred form of makeup. Because regular makeup smudges, many makeup artists who are hired for sex scene filming choose to use spray tan. Why? Because dried tan doesn’t smudge or stain sheets. Stained sheets aren’t sexy, and are a dead giveaway about the “fakeness” of a scene.

They also can apply sweat. Ever notice how movie sex scenes always seem to have people who glisten with sweat? Well they are glistening, but it’s not sweat. The “sweat” is often Vaseline, or baby oil that has water spritzed on top. Some makeup artists also may use specialized products like “Ultra Sweat” to give a realistic sheen.

Pubes are often faked, too. A large portion of sex scenes in Hollywood are made possible by merkins. Merkins are old school “wigs” made for the hair between the actor’s legs. Oddly enough, makeup artists who work on scene shoots involving sex also are paid to apply merkins to actors’ parts.

Sex toys are chosen very, very carefully. There are a lot of regulations about what can and cannot be shown on screens. As a result, many directors will have to send dozens or even hundreds of pictures of sex toys before one or two gets approved for a scene. If it’s a typical looking vibrator, it probably will not make the cut because it will be deemed “obscene.” This is actually very time-consuming.

Also, the actors don’t just strut naked on set after the scene’s done, either. Instead, they usually have someone from dress that will bring them a robe and slippers. This allows them to relax almost immediately after the day’s long shoot is done.

Sometimes, sex scenes are digitally imposed on one another. For Nymphomaniac Volume 1 a producer said that there was a serious process to filming the scene. The crew shot the actors pretending to have sex, then shot body doubles that really did have sex. Then, in post processing, they digitally superimposed the two. “So above the waist it will be the star and below the waist it will be the doubles,” explained producer Christine Vesth.

In parts which actually have privates used, prosthetics are often what make it happen. During the blowjob scene of Nymphomaniac Volume 1, the cast actually used a prosthetic penis for filming it. Similarly, in Blue Is The Warmest Color, prosthetics were also used.

Oh, and it can take way longer than just 5 or 6 hours to shoot a single sex scene. One actress that starred in Blue Is The Warmest Color was quick to note that the sex scene in the movie took a total of 10 DAYS to film. This meant that over a week of filming was spent on sex alone - nothing else.
